DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
Paula McCarthy Interiors
Paula McCarthy is the founder of Paula McCarthy Interiors, an interior design studio based in Dublin. Paula spent many years working in TV advertising before following her life-long passion into interior design. Paula’s previous career revolved around collaboration with clients, and her approach to interior design is no different. She works collaboratively with all of her clients and believes that listening to her clients’ needs and wishes, and being true to their style are key to a successful project outcome.
What is your interior design style?
My own personal style could be described as transitional – think traditional mixed with contemporary, with elements of Hamptons style thrown in for good measure. For example, pairing a timeless traditional leather sofa with a minimalist natural stone coffee table and textured jute rug or a rattan pendant light. I love incorporating natural materials into designs and mixing layers of texture. I also like to add pops of colour to designs – my favourite colours being blues and greens as they help to create a calming effect.
What trends do you see coming next year / season?
I expect to see a lot more focus and a more widespread understanding of biophilic design which is essentially connecting our interior spaces with the natural world around us. Timber finishes have really shone in 2024 and that will continue into 2025 from kitchen cabinetry, timber cladding on ceilings to bathroom vanities. I also see the increase in demand for richer colour palettes such as warming reds and terracottas, earthy browns and deep calming greens.

What are key items to watch out for when picking out sofas?
It’s important to choose a sofa that is the right style for your space. If you have a mid century modern vibe in your home, then a more minimalist sofa should be chosen rather than a sofa with fussy detail. One of the most important aspects of choosing a sofa is getting the size right. Make sure you measure out your space before choosing a sofa. Not only do you need to account for the size of the actual sofa, but you need to account for space around the sofa of approx 80 to 100cm for freedom of movement. Think about who will be using the sofa and plan your fabric accordingly. Do you have kids? Pets? Perhaps an easy clean durable fabric is the best option. Then you can finalise the details in terms of leg finishes, cushion firmness etc.
Why do you work with Finline?
It’s such a seamless process working with the team at Finline. There is a huge array of fabrics to choose from to find the perfect sofa or armchair for a client. The furniture is extremely well made so it will last a really long time. I also find the customisation option really useful for clients who have specific needs such as wanting a higher back to a chair or more back support. It’s also important to me to support local Irish businesses wherever I can.

Which other Irish Made Brands do you love working with?
I never create a design for a client without including works of an Irish artist. Whether a client know their art or not, it’s often the final piece that ties a room together. Some recent Irish artists that I have supported are Jess Kelly, Éadaoin Glynn and Lola Donoghue. I usually also include some bespoke joinery in projects as it can really maximise available space whether it be for storage or display purposes, and there are some really talented joiners and tradespeople all around Ireland. For beautiful, unique throws and styling items, Conscious Convert is a favourite Irish brand of mine. Nirvana Lighting and Mullan Lighting are also great for unique lighting options manufactured in Ireland.
Who in the industry is giving you inspiration?
I take a lot of my inspiration from US and Australian design houses such as Alexander & Co., Pure Salt Interiors, Ali Henrie and Amber Interiors. I’m really drawn to interiors that use a lot of timber finishes, natural materials and pops of colour here and there.
